Here’s a sneak peek at next week!

What a great first week! We've had fun getting to know each other and are working hard to learn classroom routines/procedures. I can already tell we are going to have a great year together!

Phonics Family Words: at, hat, bad, an, ran, sat, had, am, can, that

We will not have spelling tests in first grade. Our goal is to work with the students on building their phonological and phonemic awareness through hands-on word building and word manipulating activities. Each week, we will focus on a different “phonics family.” It is more important to us for students to be able to build a strong phonological/phonemic awareness and not memorize spelling words each week.

Need ideas for practicing phonics family words at home?

Important

Dear Parents,
I've just finished reading the rotations for tomorrow's field day and noticed that we will start with water activities and end with water activities.

That means students will start at 8:15 in water and do 5 water activities. Between 9:15 and 1:00 they will participate in 13 dry activities.  So, we will end our day as we started, in water!

So, students will need to bring 2 sets of dry clothes for tomorrow!!!!!! Or your child will be wearing wet clothes for about 4 hours, even to lunch!

We will probably change clothes around  9:15 and again around 2:00.

Please put each set of clothes in labeled grocery bags!  They will need a shirt, shorts, socks (if they wear them), underwear  and probably another pair of dry shoes in each bag.  Sandals or flip flops are fine for the end of the day, our last clothes change.

I should see them come into the classroom tomorrow with 2 plastic bags of clothes.

They may bring water bottles, hats, towel, etc. but they must be labeled and students are responsible for keeping up with belongings.

Thanks you!

Tuesday:   Write a sentence with each spelling word. We reviewed each word in class this morning, so your child should easily be able to write a quality sentence without your help. The sentences should give some evidence of the meaning and contain 6 or more words.

Homework on Wednesday and Thursday will include some difficult problems, including area, perimeter, and parallel lines. I truly believe my students can figure these out on their own.  However, I would like for you to go through the tests with your child and help/explain what they may find to be difficult.  The MAP test will cover things that I have taught and things that I have not taught!  If you have extra time, over next weekend or nightly, go on to other math test for practice.  Thanks a million!!!!

MAP testing will be after Spring Break, April 10,11,12.
Practicing for the MAP test is almost impossible since the test contains many skills that have not yet been covered for second graders.  However, I have looked around and found a pretty good resource for us to try, it does cover standards.  I will be sending a sheet home, stapled in the blue folder, for weekly practice.  It would be a great idea for you to sit with your child to help or just to see what potential test items may look like.  The students are to record their score and they may retake the test.  This not for my grading purposes at all!
Hopefully, this is a resource to help kids improve and raise their spring test scores.  You might find yourself teaching a little :)  We will do a second set in a few weeks which is really more like the MAP test.
